Overview

The Alnico Noiseless P90 Humbucker is the perfect pickup for those looking for a cleaner, more articulate tone in a Humbucker Cover. Even though we call it a P90, it’s not quite a P90: it has an airiness and sparkle not found with adjustable pole pieces. Also, it’s great for those looking to balance a dark guitar. You’ll find that this pickup stays clean, while still having a fat, beefy midrange and thickness commonly found with P90 pickups.

Sound

The Alnico Noiseless P90 Humbucker will not sound like a traditional P90, but one with a familiar Fender sparkle on the top-end. Clean and articulate when playing without distortion. You’ll find that the nuances of your playing will come out as this pickup “breathes” more than it’s compressed P90 counterpart. Chords have an excellent string-to-string definition, and single notes are round and warm. With distortion, you’ll find a breakup that is late and smooth with a familiar Fender Strat-type tone.

Our Alnico Noiseless P90 Humbucker features a pronounced midrange as well. You’ll find that the Alnico Hum-Cancelling P90 Humbucker will still sound fat and warm. The midrange is softer than a P90, but this pickup is fatter and warmer than our Big Single and Twangmaster.

Are you looking for more of a traditional P90 tone? You won’t find that here. This model features a more “Fender” quality to it. If you’re looking for a traditional P90 tone, check out our P90 and Hum Cancelling P90!

FAQs

  • What’s the tonal difference between this and your Hum-Cancelling P90? The Hum-Cancelling P90 is slightly louder, darker, and thicker. This pickup will sound not as much like a P90, more like a Fender pickup.
  • What lead do I choose? This depends on your guitar and a few other things. Gibson Lead: Go with this if installing a set into a Gibson-style instrument, where each pickup has its respective volume pot. 2-Conductor: Go with this lead if buying a Single, or fitting into a Fender-style guitar.
  • What’s the String Spacing? 49.5mm
  • How far away from the strings does the pickup need to be? Push your Low E String down at the highest fret. Measure from the top of the pole piece to the bottom of the string. The ideal starting location should be 1/8? on the bass string and 1/16? on the treble string, when the High E string is pushed down at highest fret.

2 Questions about Alnico Noiseless P90 - Humbucker

  1. Hi folks! I’m going to buying one of your pickups for the purposes of building my own humbucker-routed guitar, and I was wondering if this pickup was voiced more similar to a Tele/Stratty chime, or the slightly warmer sound distinct of a Jazzmaster. I’m looking for a “Jazzmaster sound that fits in a humbucker.” if that makes any sense, and I want to make sure I’m buying the right pickup for me. Additionally, if this is not the pickup that suits my needs, should I just rout the guitar I already planned on using for a project for the noiseless JM pickups Fralin offers? I don’t mind doing this, I just want to know If I’m going to need to do extra routing to get the sound I want. Alternatively, does Fralin offer custom one-off pickups (at a premium of course!) that could be made to achieve this sound? Cheers and thanks! 🙂

    1. Hey Rose, This pickup really does sound like a Jazzmaster meets a Fender Strat / Tele. It has a lot of the sparkle and chime of a Fender Strat / Tele, but due to the hum-cancelling design of the pickup, the Alnico P90 sounds a bit thicker, closer to the Jazzmaster. I believe you would be happy with this model, based on what you are looking for.

  2. Hi, is this pickup brighter than the P92 (with 500k pots) ? Thanks.

    Alnico Rod P-90
Fabulous sounding pickup for the neck slot of my home brew hybrid Tele. Exactly what I was looking for–great clarity plus a full, sweet tone. Highest recommendation.

The tone you can count on

This is the second one of these I bought but the first time I’ve gotten it in the humbucker size. It’s plainly and simply a fat beefy single coil without the high-end loss attribute to such style pickups. It’s pretty much always on for me. I added a Gilmour switch to turn this on in the neck regardless of where the 5-way switch is. Just in case I wanna add the neck at any given moment and for that breathtaking bridge/neck combo you never get in a strat. Fralin noiseless p-90 is where my p90 search ends. I don’t care to know what else is out there anymore.

Pickups are great and exceed my expectations. thank you very much. I will keep it forever!

    Big tone, no noise!

Installed this in the middle position on a Les Paul Custom. It was an excellent choice. Big, clean, and clear single-coil tone to contrast the humbuckers in the neck and bridge. And best of all no noise!

  5. Larry Thompson
    Verified Buyer

Put one of these at my Strat neck position. I have split blade blues I’m the middle. Works really well. The Alnico P90 is warm & bright with excellent, note separation.

Absolutely stunning clarity and presence! Great with my overdrive pedals, very responsive to the tone control, works well with the bridge pickup – a Rio Grande Greasegunner. Together with the Fralin mini humbucker (alnico 5) my favourite neck pickup!

  7. Steve Elden
    Verified Buyer

Smooth and sweet! My guitar guru, Al Milburn, suggested that I contact Fralin Pickups to purchase a replacement for the neck pickup in my Yamaha Pacifica. I called and got to speak with Linday Fralin himself, who was very friendly and directed me to the appropriate section of pickups on the website so I could listen to the sound clips and make a choice. The Alnico Noiseless P90 sounded best so I ordered one and had Al install it. It’s a great pickup with a smooth and sweet sound. The pickup sounds wonderful by itself and also in combination with the bridge pickup. I’ve played several gigs with the Yamaha (left my Tele and the single-coil hum and buzz at home) and received compliments from my bandmates and audience members on how good it sounds.

Get big, lovely, single coil tone with no noise!
Superb clarity, bright and glassy but still classy.

It’s higher output than your average single coil, so keep that in mind. If you’re looking for that rich, high output single coil tone with no noise, I highly recommend it! If you want something that will pull an edge-of-breakup amp back down off the ledge (without adjusting your volume knob), you can drop the pickup height (like I did) or possibly look at the lower output options like the Sunbucker.

My friends are very impressed with the sound of the P90; one said he may have to buy a pair. They are truly noiseless & yet have that fenderish brightness.
