Sound

As we’re sure you’re aware, a known challenge with P90 pickups is the hum. Rest assured: we’ve solved that problem and found a unique, versatile sonic footprint where the P-92 fits perfectly.

The P-92 features a cleaner and more articulate overall tone. It’s more “polite” than our Hum Cancelling P90s, and much clearer-sounding than our Pure P.A.F. That said, the P-92 offers you a thick, warm midrange accompanied by a stiffer and rounder treble – perfect for many music styles.

The P-92 is quick to break up, but you’ll find that it’s still clearer, like traditional Vintage P90s. Built with alnico V magnets, we use 42-gauge or 43 gauge wire depending on the strength you need.

When playing clean, you’ll find that this pickup has a thicker, bold tone with a stiff high end. With distortion, you’ll find that the grind is dirtier than our Big Single, but not as much as a typical Humbucker.

Players who want a sparkly-top end should look at our Twangmasters, as our P-92’s sound more like a Gibson.

It all starts here: our manufacturing process allows us to achieve unparalleled quality control. Our P-92’s consist of USA-Made bobbins, baseplates, magnets, and wire.

We wind each pickup by hand, one at a time using our proprietary “Sectioning” technique. This gives the pickup a sweet, bright tone. We assemble each pickup one at a time, by hand. This allows us to achieve unbeatable attention to detail. Finally, we wax-pot the pickup to prevent microphonics and to preserve the pickup for years to come.

See below for our Lead color codes. For help with matching to other manufacturers, check out this resource here.

Gibson Braided Lead:

2-Conductor With Shield
Gibson Braided Lead - Use on Gibson-Style Instruments only, where each pickup has it's own respective volume and tone pot. Do not select this lead on Fender-style instruments, unless the instrument is wired like a Gibson, like a Telecaster Deluxe. This lead is non-reversible. You cannot split the humbucker with this lead.

2-Conductor With Shield
Two-Conductor Lead - Select this lead if wiring to a Blade Switch or buying a single pickup. 2-Conductor allows you to reverse the phase of the pickup.

  2. I have a 335 and strat w/ texas pickups. I changed the 335 57's for a P90 (alnicoII-enamel-9.2k-7.2k) love it! No need to always backup neck volume (as I did w/ 57s). Nice clarity, mids and noise canc. on mid pos. However. w/ gain, its gets too noisy in neck/bridge pos. I was thinking about a HumCanc. P90s, but I am afraid to be too dark for the 335. Then, I looked Alnico HumCanc. P90s, but I don't want 335 to sound too similar to the strat. Fina... Read more

Hey Goose, yes, you can definitely do this. I find that the P-92 sounds best on a 500K pot, and the Twangmaster sounds best on a 250K pot. You can accomplish this by using a 500K master volume and running a 470K (or 500K if you can find it) from the switch to ground where you solder your Neck pickup. Hey Jesse, you would need something F-Spaced, more likely. That said, if your strings are close to the 50mm mark when you measure, the P-92 should work. Here's how to measure String Spacing: https://www.fralinpickups.com/2017/11/16/check-string-spacing/

  14. What’s the tonal difference between this and your Hum-Cancelling P90?
  15. Q What’s the tonal difference between this and your Hum-Cancelling P90?
A The Hum-Cancelling P90 is slightly louder, darker, and thicker. It’s quicker to break up. The P-92 is more of a blend with a traditional Vintage P90 – cleaner and clearer.
  16. What output do I choose?
  17. Q What output do I choose?
A The best selling set is a Stock Neck and a Stock Bridge. Getting more turns will add midrange and make the pickup sound darker and thicker. Going with fewer turns will make the pickup sound clearer and more articulate.
  18. What lead do I choose?
  19. Q What lead do I choose?
A This depends on your guitar and a few other things. Gibson Lead: Go with this if installing a set into a Gibson-style instrument, where each pickup has its respective volume pot. 2-Conductor: Go with this lead if buying a Single, or installing into a Fender-style instrument. This is also useful for phase reversal, which is why we recommend it if ordering a single pickup to match another manufacturer's pickups.
  20. Will this fit in a Humbucker Position?
  21. Q Will this fit in a Humbucker Position?
A Yes. It’s Gibson humbucker sized.
  22. What’s the String Spacing?
  23. Q What’s the String Spacing?
    A 49.3mm
  24. How far away do the strings need to be from the pickup?
  25. Q How far away do the strings need to be from the pickup?
A Push your Low E String down at the highest fret. Measure from the top of the pole piece to the bottom of the string. The ideal starting location should be 1/8? on the bass string, and 1/16? on the treble string when the High E string is pushed down at the highest fret.
  26. I spoke with Lindy Fralin this morning, a truly wonderful experience and I just ordered a pair of P92s for my ES 335. Lindy stated that the standard Gibson 500K pots would be fine for these pickups, but I forgot to ask about capacitors. Do I treat these as single coil, humbuckers, or P90s? Will the caps I already have in my guitar (set up for Burstbuckers) be fine or do I need to consider something different. Thanks

A Hey Micheal, You would want to treat these as P90s. They will sound best with 500K pots. I’m a fan of 0.02 or 0.047 caps, but I’m sure they will sound great with whatever you have installed!
  28. So happy to find a set of humbucker sized p90, and noiseless to boot! My question is, as a lefty, the pickups, no matter how oriented in my Les Paul, will have the pole pieces staggered opposite of their intended design. However, I am thinking about using a P-92 in the neck as I am wanting a little bit cleaner/brighter pickup in the neck. A Yep! The P-92 and the Pure P.A.F. will make a great set together. I would recommend overwinding the P92 by 2% to keep up with the Bridge. They won’t overpower one another, but the added midrange from overwinding the P-92 by 2% will keep the tone a bit more consistent.

    Totally awesome!
I had gibson 57 classic. too muddy, later I got P90s, too noisy. Now, I got Franlin P-92s (2% and 5% overwound). They have beef, but a lot more articulated and less compressed than a PAF, a liiiittle less mid creamy as a P-90 but zero noise though!

  2. Cody

Amazingly versatile pickup. I put a full stock set in a telecaster deluxe. Dead quiet and can get beautifully detailed cleans that are still rich sounding. Also sounds great for high gain and edge of breakup tones. Best pickups I have ever used.

    Fantastico!! 6-Stars
Running a 5% underwound P-92 in an HH tele, neck position, recessed under pickguard (esquire-ish look) or convertible to a surface mount trim ring. Great either way!

Pole pieces needed very little adjustment across strings. EQ of pickup is very well balanced – tastefully present mid details and excellent high roll off.

  4. Matthew Halvatzis

I just installed these into a P92-Split Blade Blues Output-P92 strat guitar, and they sound fantastic. I have the Fralin humcancelling 90s and the 92s are very accurately a slightly more “polite” version of those. I did an additional 5% overwind which I’m happy about but I’m sure I would just been as happy with the stock winding. They pair well in the combination strat positions with the split blade getting you very quacky strat tones. I’m also using a bass contour circuit which just gives me more options onboard. Lindy and the entire staff were super helpful helping me figure this out, and were super helpful when UPS lost my package for 2 weeks.
