Sound

Fralin P-Bass Pickups are like our J-Bass® Replacements: they have a huge fat tone. Fralin P-Bass Pickups are fat, punchy, and round. The lows are deep and rich, and the highs are sweet and clear. The first thing you’ll notice when you install these pickups is how you can hear more of your P-Bass. You’ll hear an extended low-end and a rounder top-end. These pickups are very vintage sounding, but with modern power.

  • For an era-authentic 50’s tone, use our “Stock Wind”, or, choose “N/A” under output preference
  • For a thicker midrange and fewer highs, choose +5%. This will reduce the highs by 5%, and increase the lows and mids by 5%.
  • For an even thicker tone than the +5%, you can opt for +10%. This is perfect for anyone looking for an aggressively strong midrange and dark tone. Perfect for balancing out a bright sounding bass.
  • If you’re looking for a little cleaner tone, use our -5% wind. This will increase the highs by 5%, and decrease the mids by 5%.

Hey there, I was looking to upgrade a new squire p bass with some fralins and I want to also upgrade the pots it came with. Should I stick to the traditional 250k pots for the stock wound pickups? Also, by winding the pickups +5% what overall effect do you notice in comparison to stock and +10%? Would those overwound pickups be better with a 500k pot or would you say 250k is good for all of those options?

Hey Ryan, stick with 250K pots no matter what option you choose. For the overwinding, check out this article here. What does Overwinding and Underwinding a pickup do?

  2. Hi! I bought a 1973 Fender Precision Bass with new Lindy Fralin pickups according to seller. Sound of the pickups is quite weak compared to my 1974 Fender Precision Bass with original pickups. I measured resistance of both pickups and they were 5,42K and 5,43K. These numbers are far away from original 10,5K. Do you have any idea why the resistance and the output are so low? Hey Kimmo, the total resistance of the pickup should be about 10.8 ~ 11K, if you measure from White to Black (both coils). If you're measuring that way and you're getting only ~5K, something is wrong. Can you confirm?

  4. For your P-Bass pickup with normal output, what pot and capacitor values do you recommend? I’m looking for a warm, vintage sound a la mid 60’s R&B, if that matters. Thank you.

Hey Erin, we recommend our Stock output for that late 50's / 60's sound.

  8. What is the optimal distance from pickup to each string? (BTW, I love my P Pickups)
  9. Q What is the optimal distance from pickup to each string? (BTW, I love my P Pickups)
    A

    Hey Eddy,

Our recommended Pickup Height is 1/8" on the Bass Side and 1/16" on the Treble Side. Measure by holding the corresponding side down at it's highest fret and measure from the bottom of the string to the top of the pole piece.

I called and spoke to Lindy personally over the phone, told him what exactly I wanted my 98 Made in Mexico Pbass to sound like, he recommended the stock Pups. I ordered about 2 months ago, and finally had them installed. Wow! These are truly, the best sounding pups I’ve ever heard! My bass sounds exactly what’s been missing from my sound! So versatile as well with all styles of whatever I want! I highly recommend these, and will be installing in all my bass guitars in the future! Lindy, I want to personally say thank you, and you have another customer for life!

These are the most awesome bass pickups I have ever owned
The lows and the mids out these p bass pickups are way beyond my expectations
    I am
So happy that I decided to install these in my p bass
I would suggest them for anyone wanting to upgrade their p bass

My only complaint was that the pickups were a little bit larger than the original one and I had to cut out my pick guard to install them properly
    They truly do sound AMAZING!!

Simply the best pickups and the best customer service.

I’ve had Fralin P-Bass pickups in my #1 Precision for over 10 years. They’re perfect for me in every way; exactly the sound I want and never any trouble. So, when I decided to build a custom fretless P-bass, I never considered anything else. Why would I? If you want the best pickups, made exactly the way they should be made, from the nicest and most helpful folks in the business, buy from Lindy Fralin. And, if you want the best sound from your P-bass, buy these.
