Dogear Shim Height Calculator
Calculate what shims you need!
- Select your cover height. Most cover heights are either 1/4" (Short Dogear) or 7/16" (Standard Dogear).
- Depress the Low E string at the highest fret
- With the Low E depressed, measure from the bottom of your pickup to the bottom of the string
- Input that measurement into the "String Height" box, and calculate!
Note: Shims are stackable and sandable. It's good practice to get more shim than you need, then sand it down to meet your measurement.

Just bought a pair of P90’s that I installed on an Epiphone WildKat, knowed for its mediocre tone. Wow and rewow! Not only is it now alive, but it gained tons of dynamics and richness with a color so sweet you want to kiss the guitar.

I had a casino coupe I was ready to give up on but instead decided to see if new pickups could convince me it was worth keeping. The stock epi p90 sound is gigantic but in a very undefined way. They are 12k which sounds awesome but is not awesome in reality. There’s a preponderance of low mids which was hiding anything remotely defined. It was impossible to sing in a baritone over the top of anything beyond the bridge setting. When I put in the new Fralin stock p90 option (-10% neck) and a new 50s wiring harness I was startled by how different the guitar sounded. It sounded better and removed that awful low-mid nonsense that was going on. I could sing over the top of what I was playing and yet the guitar still remained it’s hugeness. The neck and middle setting hit hard even on a tiny black star fly amp. I use it with a box of rock and a reverb pedal and it’s epic. Nice job guys.

The best P90 sound
The best tested P90 pickups. I bought the set. used with a wiring consisting of a three-position selector, 500k pot volume and 500k half-phase push-pull tone pot. Incredible sound and sustain. Big mid-range when clean and chainsaw grind when pushing an amp hard. Pickups very versatile in tone, they pass with the balance from medium-bodied to bright treble. Amazing in the crunch.

P90 classic bridge pickup. Really good sound clean or distorted. I can’t play well enough to do it justice, but it sets a standard to achieve.

Tremendous sound!
I installed the p-90 in the neck position in my Telecaster I’m conjunction with a four-way switch. This is my fourth Fralin pickup and I’m very pleased! -
First of all I was very impressed that the owner of the company answered the phone when I called. That being said, Lindy was very helpful with my selection of pickups. I got the stock p90 set. I put them in CASINO that I got a good deal on. Lindy’s P90’s put the sparkle in this guitar, and the grit when you ask for it. The only thing I think I’m going to have to do is put a shim under the neck pickup, we will see. overall a great purchase and super customer service. I’ll look here first the next time I need pickups, Thank you so much!

P90 Splendor
I’ve known Lindy and have used/sold his pickups for about 20+ years. He’s never failed to “nail it” when it comes to providing me with the sound that was in my head when I placed my order. To my ears, these P90s have the proper balance of midrange to treble. They can both grind when pushed hard as well as be beautiful and subtle when the right-hand calls for it. I’ve never had a customer be anything but thrilled with their purchase. -

Bought the dog ear ones for a new Epiphone Casino. The guitar just came to life. Totally different guitar then before! Its like magic. Lindy was helpful the whole time. I purchased the neck p90 as part of a set with the tele split steel pole bridge pickup. I had this neck p90 -5% wind and requested the outputs to be even between the two pickups. By chance I used a volume pot that was a little bit higher than 500K and read 545K. I really dug the brighter sound! Subtle but noticeable to my ears. Great sounding pickup, easy to install and quality to last a lifetime. This sound suits any type of music. Thanks!

Anyway, I think Fralin pickups are great. They compare favourably with any other maker’s pickups as far as sound is concerned and their customer service is second to none.
