  1. Neck Coil Split

  3. Master Coil Split
  4. Phase Reverse

If you want something that you don’t see, contact us below and we’ll let you know what we can do!

Note:
All Push Pull Mods must have Multiple Leads. If you have Gibson Braided Lead on your pickups, none of the Push Pull mods will work.
Note:
Our Push Pull Mods are labeled with our wiring color codes.  If you are using another manufacturer’s humbuckers, look up their color codes to make sure the pickups will work seamlessly with our harness. Here’s a great resource. Our Color Codes are here.

Installation Instructions

Tools Needed:

  • Soldering Iron & Quality Solder (We use Kester 60/40)
  • 1/2" Nut Driver
  • Cable Cutters
  • Screwdriver
  • Masking Tape and pen (for labeling wires)

Difficulty:

Moderate difficulty. We recommend taking this harness to an experienced luthier if you are uncomfortable with soldering and working with guitar electronics. If you're comfortable, installation should be a breeze.

Installation Steps

Before You Begin: It’s important to think about the scope of the install before digging in to your guitar. Ask yourself a few questions:

  1. Are you replacing the pickups?
  2. Are you replacing the switch?

If you’re replacing the pickups and the switch, it’s important to note what order they go back in the guitar. Always install the item furthest away from the control cavity first, before installing the harness.

For example:

  • If you’re replacing the switch, you’ll need to temporarily pull the pickups out of the guitar to guide the switch through the body.
  • If you’re replacing the pickups and the switch, take everything out first, then install the switch, then pickups, then harness last.

This will make your install easier as it’s much easier to install items through the wire rout when they are out of the instrument.

Okay, with that out the way…here we go!

Step 1: Prep and Remove Existing Harness

This step, we will remove the existing harness from your guitar and prep for the installation of the new harness. We don't want to get our wires mixed up, so the key is to unsolder each wire one at a time and label it so we can stay organized.

  1. Remove the backplate with a screwdriver to expose the electronics
  2. Unsolder the Neck pickup from the Neck Pickup Volume Pot and label it with some tape
  3. Unsolder the Bridge pickup from the Bridge Pickup Volume Pot and label it with some tape
  4. Unsolder the Output Jack's Ground and Hot wire
  5. With all wires unsoldered, remove the speed knobs on the guitar and use a 1/2" nut driver to loosen the hex nuts. Remove the hex nuts and remove the existing harness.

Step 2: Install New Harness

During this step, we want to make sure that our harness fits in perfectly. Our harnesses are guaranteed to fit Gibson® Les Pauls. Epiphones will fit as well, but due to different countries of origin, some finessing may be required - don't worry - it's designed to have some give.

An empty control cavity with an arrow pointing to a full control cavity
  1. Remove the hex nuts and washers from the pots and remove the harness from our harness board.
  2. Keeping the lock washer on the bottom of the pot, install each pot and split a flat washer and hex nut to secure the harness.

Step 3: Wire Pickups

This step, we will solder the pickup's leads to their corresponding Volume Pot. For both Pickups, we solder the pickup's ground to the casing, and the pickup's hot lead to the Middle Lug. Start with the Neck Pickup.

Once soldered, move on to the Bridge Pickup:

Step 4: Wire the Output Jack

The last step is to solder the output jack. Take the White from the Switch and solder to the terminal below. Ground the other tab. Important: reversing this connection will make everything sound awful, so take your time with this connection. If you need additional information, check out our article on the subject here.

Once everything is soldered up, I recommend performing the tap test on each pickup to an amp turned on low. Test each volume pot and tone pot while lightly tapping on the pickup's screws. Once confirmed working, Replace the back plate and output jack plate, string it up,

Prewired Les Paul Harness FAQ's

Product FAQ's

People frequently ask these questions about our Prewired Les Paul Harness. If you have a question that you don't see listed here, click "Ask" in the Quick Links section above.

  • Can I customize my harness?

Yes you can! We offer a lot of customization on our site, but feel free to reach out to us at our contact form for anything you don’t see listed on the page. We’ll see what we can do.

  • Is my harness returnable?

Customized Harnesses are not returnable. Standard Harnesses are returnable minus a restocking fee.

  • What's the difference between the Les Paul and Les Paul Special?

Les Pauls have a carved top and require 3/4″ Shaft pots. Les Paul Specials have a flat top and require shorter pots.

Note: This harness will not work with a Les Paul Special Double Cut.

  • Does the harness come with a Switch?

For an additional fee, you can add on a switch in two wiring configurations. Low Profile and Vintage wiring.

    • Low Profile Wiring: we use a single multi-conductor lead to wire up the Jack and both Pickups.
    • Vintage Wiring: we use three Gibson Braided Leads tied together to form a vintage wiring setup.
    • In either use case:
      • White = Main Output
      • Red = Neck Hot
      • Black = Bridge Hot
      • Shielding = Ground
  • Will this Harness fit my Les Paul?

We’ve tested our harnesses on Gibson and Epiphone Les Pauls. Gibsons fit perfectly.

Epiphones, depending on the country of origin, may require a bit of finessing to fit, but will eventually drop in. We guarantee a fit in both guitars.

Muchas gracias siempre se aprende algo nuevo ?.

  2. Brian Hill

Just wanted to say I LOVE the new ’50s LP wiring harness, push/pull pots, and Unbucker pickups! I wanted to make my LP Studio more versatile, and this has certainly done that. The stock Gibson 490R/498T pickups were pretty good for classic and hard rock, but I think the Unbuckers have much more clarity and articulation. The outputs are also better balanced for my tastes. There’s virtually no hum when in single-coil mode. With the new volume pots, I have better control over level and gain. Thank you!

  3. Mark Mccarter

Works well in my setup and has made a great improvement

  4. John Harrison

Looking to rewire bridge pick-up out of phase ,go from sinewave to triangle wave, to give the pickup a violin sound( with fast decay ), incorporating a mini double pole, double throw switch. I had this configuration on my SG
