Sound

As we’re sure you’re aware, a known challenge with P90 pickups is the hum. Rest assured: we’ve solved that problem and found a unique, versatile sonic footprint where the P-92 fits perfectly.

The P-92 features a cleaner and more articulate overall tone. It’s more “polite” than our Hum Cancelling P90s, and much clearer-sounding than our Pure P.A.F. That said, the P-92 offers you a thick, warm midrange accompanied by a stiffer and rounder treble – perfect for many music styles.

The P-92 is quick to break up, but you’ll find that it’s still clearer, like traditional Vintage P90s. Built with alnico V magnets, we use 42-gauge or 43 gauge wire depending on the strength you need.

When playing clean, you’ll find that this pickup has a thicker, bold tone with a stiff high end. With distortion, you’ll find that the grind is dirtier than our Big Single, but not as much as a typical Humbucker.

Players who want a sparkly-top end should look at our Twangmasters, as our P-92’s sound more like a Gibson.

It all starts here: our manufacturing process allows us to achieve unparalleled quality control. Our P-92’s consist of USA-Made bobbins, baseplates, magnets, and wire.

We wind each pickup by hand, one at a time using our proprietary “Sectioning” technique. This gives the pickup a sweet, bright tone. We assemble each pickup one at a time, by hand. This allows us to achieve unbeatable attention to detail. Finally, we wax-pot the pickup to prevent microphonics and to preserve the pickup for years to come.

Kinda’ Punchy. The attack is a little overpowered. Not suitable for smooth jazz or soft careful nuances. Can stand chicken pluckin’. For me it’s an acquired taste and I’m struggling a bit here. Most of my effort is clean, dirty sounds good, very unique. Grateful.

Lindy answered the phone and was very helpful talking through my guitar and what I wanted to accomplish with a pickup change.
I ordered P92s for a PRS McCarty Korina and it is the sound I wanted. The P92s are a hint clearer/brighter than a typical P90. They still have a great, vintage midrange but without any 60hz hum.

$800 bought me a 2006 dime-a-dozen Les Paul “Studio” with incredible resonance and feel, and lighter weight than some of its’ more “featured” fancy siblings. The only thing missing – no surprise – was “that sound.” The stock pickups, especially the neck, come off as muddy, cloudy, mushy? Somehow not present enough? I’m a producer, I play a lot of different styles on client projects, and I wanted that straight up vintage vibe I had heard from so many Les Paul recordings from years past. I called Lindy to discuss, told him that I needed something that would give me balanced tone across the pickups, would sit well in ensemble, and speak flexibly – clean or dirty – no matter the genre or vibe. Without hesitation, he immediately suggested the P92s. I ordered, and received inside of 2 weeks. Installation and a setup took a few hours, but man, it’s a brand new world here. This guitar, for an all-in of around $1300 (guitar and set of stock P92’s) so easily hangs with axes of exponentially higher value. What a joy to play … and with 92’s, a set of 10’s, and stock electronics, I’m able to get all the tones I need without fuss. Inspiring, useful, predictable, familiar, easy. Way beyond my expectations. Amazing. Thank you Lindy, thank you people of Fralin, I’m beyond happy.

Got this with 8200 turns (neck) for an Artstar primarily for jazz, reggae, funk. Absolutely blow away by this pickup. It has such a great balance, clarity, sensitivity, and snappiness but still round and fat. Not harsh on the high end or overbearing on the low end. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to humbucker. Absolutely perfect on all fronts for my preferences and delivered way earlier than posted lead time. Thanks Lindy and team.

Dropped this into the neck position of my tele (with a split steel poled in the bridge) to replace a Pure P.A.F. The Pure P.A.F. was not really articulate enough for what I needed (still a great humbucker just not what I had in my head). Saw the Chris Whiteman demo and just fell in love with the sound, I’m a jazz player so that articulation that the P-92 brings is really a treat. I don’t really agree with the Fralin description of this pickup, I think it sounds more like the perfect mix of a humbucker and a p90 rather than a p90 and single coil (the alnico poled hum cancelling p90 which i have in my other tele really hits that mark though). It’s got that awesome humbucker beefiness and depth that I love, while having the clarity and note definition of a vintage p90. It’s just an unbelievable mix of sound, really almost the best pickup I’ve ever heard. And it’s SILENT! So smooth, articulate, running with 500k pots and it’s just a dream. I’ve got fralins in all of my guitars and this is probably my favorite pickup of the bunch. Ten stars. Buy it.

Put it in the neck position on a Chinese Ibanez Artcore AF-125 Quilted Amberburst AF-125, their top of the line under $1,000. The bridge pickup was replaced by a Seymour Duncan Antiquity bridge humbucker. Being a jazzer, I play off the neck pickup 90 percent of the time. The stock pickups, pots, caps, and wiring were inferior. Your P-92 has no mud, and is also full and biting. Probably the closest thing to a Charlie Christian pickup I’ve ever tried. I have a CC on a Heritage H-550. I am very pleased with this pickup, as was my tech. He said that the added difficulty in making a supreme pickup is not that much greater than a junk one, and does not understand why it takes a Lindy Fralin to make an outstanding pickup, but apparently it does. I really made a lucky and sound choice with the Fralin P-92. Saw the Chris Whiteman video with his ES-336, and knew that pickup would be IT! Thanks, Fralin Company!- Charles Bevell. French Lick, IN

I finally got around to swapping these P92s into a brand new ES 335 Gibson. I had ordered them last winter but have been trying to decide whether I wanted to stay with the ‘T’ type buckers the guitar came with. The ‘T’s were just too thick and chewy for my tastes so they had to go. At first when I opened the P92s I was really mad because both pickups were marked for neck and checked out at 6.6 and 6.7 ohms DCR. The adsvertisement states that the Bridge pickup is a little hotter at 7.8 DCR. Well, I went ahead and installed them anyway with the 6.6 taking the Neck position and the 6.7 in Bridge. Tested them out through a little Valvetrain 205 which is a variant of a Tweed 5F1 with tone control and no negative feedback. Added some verb and a Memphis Sun pedal and now all I can say is, Lindy, if you had tits I’d kiss ya! This 335 now sounds exactly like I want it to sound! These pickups add the perfect amount of snarl when guitar volume knobs are at 10 and clean up sweet when volumes are rolled back. The bridge is one of the very few pickups I like in that position and it was supposed to be a neck pup! I’ve noticed that some of your pickups are advertised as having Strat-like chime in the top end. These P92s are more comparible to a Telecaster growl. Add the resonance of a semi-hollow and this is hardcore Blues machinery. I’m 6’3″ so the body of a 335 fits me like a glove and now I have the sound I’ve been after. Thankyou for a first rate product!

Sometimes there’s truth in advertising! These do exactly what Lindy says they’ll do.

I put these in my main road guitar because I don’t like using noise gates, but needed something more strident than humbuckers… and they work! I’ve been able to idle dead quiet on stages that I KNOW have power issues.

But Lindy and his team delivered even more: these have the chewiness of a p90, but the extra high-end helps a lot in most any mix. (too bright? use your tone knob, ya goof!)
They also do an excellent job of cleaning up with the knobs and pick attack, which has saved me a TON of tap-dancing, allowed me to remove a gain stage from my live board, and even upgraded my road guitar to a regular position in the studio rotation.

For what it’s worth: I’m not some blues lawyer or guitar dad. Literally every dollar I’ve earned for most of my life has come from performing, recording, or teaching music. That is to say, my livelihood depends on sounding good and I can’t recommend these enough!

    They are insane

Not only do they sound fabulous; but Lindley fralin found time to talk me through the best of fit for the PRS mira s2 I was looking to put p90s into.

I may try his humbuckers given how amazing my experience has been with my prs custom 24 and it’s not like prs pickups aren’t damn good:)

If I could leave 6 stars out of 5 I would. Can’t say good enough things about the product and people who make it.

This pick up will stay clean with light pick attack with higher gain settings. It breaks up very well. Very dynamic and touch sensitive. I attempted to pair it with a Sunbucker neck. I need to figure wiring so I can control tone. I ended up pulling it out for now but I’m keeping P92 for another project. I think it will pair better with AlNiCo P90. I can’t wait. Love all of Fralin’s pickups. My goal is to have them all!
