How It's Made:

Overview

This might be the ultimate prewired pickguard for Strat. Our Prewired 4 Split Blade Pickguard is truly unique. This pickguard gives you hum-free performance, with H-S-S and S-S-S sounds. The unique dual Split Blade bridge gives a humbucker tone when both Split Blades are on. When Split, you’ll get hum-free single-coil tones. This allows you to have a ton of amazing noiseless options at your fingertips. You can customize your pickguard exactly how you want it, and we’ll make it to your specifications.

Sound & Look

CHOOSE YOUR PICKGUARD:

We wanted to use the finest quality pickguards available. We had Allparts custom-make these pickguards specifically for us. These are custom-designed 11-hole Stratocaster pickguards, designed to use two Split Blades in the bridge. We have them available in the following plys and colors:

  1. White – 3 Ply
  2. Parchment (off white) – 3 Ply
  3. Mint Green – 3 Ply
  4. Black – 3-Ply

CHOOSE YOUR PICKUPS:

With our 4-Split Blade Pickguard, you can choose any combination of pickups you would like. There are a few popular combinations available. First, our compensated sets sound the even across all pickups. For instance, choosing the Vintage Set will give you an even, authentic Fender tone. Furthermore, you can mix pickup outputs to achieve the effect you want. A popular combination is using Vintage in the Neck and Middle, and High Output in the Bridge.
Determining the outputs and pot values are important for a great-sounding guitar. Vintage Output & High Output Split Blades sound best with 250K pots. Blues Output & Super High Output Split Blades sound best with 500K pots.

See below for a useful chart:

Wiring

Customize your pickguard’s wiring by selecting between two powerful wiring options. Select between Fralin Pickups Wiring and Standard Stratocaster® Wiring.

Fralin Pickups Wiring features an intuitive layout: a Master Volume, Master Tone, and a Blender Pot. The Blender Pot delivers incredible versatility by allowing you to combine the Neck and Bridge, for Telecaster-type tones, and more. Fralin Pickups wiring is Lindy’s favorite way to wire a Stratocaster.

Lindy Fralin Wiring

Standard Stratocaster Wiring delivers a classic take on the Strat – a Master Volume, Neck & Middle Tone, and a separate Bridge Tone. This wiring allows you to select multiple cap values for a bit more tone versatility.

Installation Instructions

Installation of our Prewired Stratocaster Pickguard is a breeze, and most can handle it with basic soldering skills. If you are uncomfortable with soldering or working on a guitar, take the pickguard and your guitar to a local, experienced luthier for installation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfkoDIVZytg

Installation Overview:

Remove your existing strings, pickguard, and output jack (if replacing), and replace with a new Pickguard and Output Jack. Test the installation with a "tap test" by tapping on the pickups while plugged into your amp on low volume to make sure the installation was successful before stringing your guitar.

Tools Needed

  • Soldering Iron & Solder (We use Kester 60/40)
  • Phillips head screwdriver (For removing pickguard, backplate, and output jack mount)
  • Wire cutters (for trimming excess wire, if needed)
  • 1/2" Hex Nut Driver (for uninstalling and installing the output jack)

Step 1: Remove Strings and Prep For Installation

Perform the following steps to get started:

  1. Remove the strings from your instrument
  2. Optional: Unscrew the tremolo cover and save all screws in a safe place - See note below
  3. Unscrew the Jack Mount plate to expose the output jack
  4. Use the 1/2" Hex Nut Driver to unscrew the hex nut while holding the output jack from the back to uninstall the output jack from the plate
  5. Unsolder the leads connecting the output jack (if replacing the jack, simply snip the leads off)

Step 2: Uninstall the existing pickguard

Next, simply unscrew all pickguard screws and put in a safe place. The pickguard should wiggle free and lift out of the guitar.

Cut or unsolder any of the ground connections holding the pickguard in the guitar. You will need to solder these connections back on the new pickguard.

With all the Ground connections removed from the pickguard, you may now remove the existing pickguard from your guitar.

Step 3: Install your new pickguard

With the old pickguard out of the way, we can now proceed to install the new pickguard! It's a good idea to lay the pickguard down to make sure everything fits and the holes line up. If the mounting holes do not line up, mark the new location and drill a 1/16" pilot hole for the new screw location. This is a simple, non-invasive way to make sure the new pickguard fits perfectly.

Here's how to wire up the new pickguard:

Prewired Strat Pickguard Installation Guide
Each pickguard comes with One White and Two Black Wires. Here's where they go. The Black Wires can go either place as they are simple ground connections.

Install the Jack to the Jack Plate, wire it up, screw everything back in, and plug the guitar in before stringing it up to make sure everything works.

Final Step: Adjust Pickup Heights

Finally, adjust the height of your pickups to the appropriate height. We have a whole guide for you to follow here. Here's a cheat sheet to get it up and running quickly:

This pickup combination with the split coil on the humbucker and the blender pot for combining the neck and bridge pickups makes for an incredibly versatile set. I can get just about any sound I could imagine from just the pickups alone. When combined with pedals, the versatility is essentially unlimited. You can get the expected strat & tele sounds and the roar of humbuckers. I’m thrilled with them. And the folks at Fralin were great to work with. When I called to discuss my guitar build project and what I wanted in pickups, who should answer the phone but Lindy himself. He was patient and helpful and steered me to the split blade setup, and I’m glad he did. I couldn’t be happier.

  2. Kenneth Pirnar

I am enjoying my 4 Split Blade Blues set up, each day I get to find new settings and new sounds, I am not a pro player so experimenting is a blast for me, it was a special build because I wanted a Tortoise Shell pick guard. I hope they decide to offer the Tortoise and White Pearloid guards in the pre wired 4 Slit Blade in the future, best sounding guitar I have

  3. Dave Davis

Just what I was looking for in versatility, great sounding… Thanks a pile!

  4. Krishna Guthrie

    Amazing Sound, Amazing Support
These are the best sounding pick ups I’ve ever played. With this setup, I’m able to to get all of my favorite SSS tones with the ability to drive a little harder with the humbucker. I added the blender pot option, and I highly recommend it. Along with the tones mentioned above, the blender pot allows me to dial in a pretty convincing tele tone. I never want to put down my guitar again!

Split blades HSS; double High Output and 2x Blues

Put them, into a Fender Stratocaster American Special HSS. Getting it installed was a bit of hassle since the cavity of the original Atomic humbucker is few mm smaller than the double split blades require. Luthier solved the problem and there was no more annoyance, only the pure joy of tonality. They’re very good sounding, powerful and beefy, still with the taste of the original single coils. I love the versatility of the blender pot. I also enjoy the sound of the middle position, which I never used before. There is a pull/push bright switch installed, but I don’t see it too useful (yet). It’s the excessive bright tone of the Strat that I wanted to get rid of. I set up the pickups much lower, then Lindy recommended, around 3 mm from the fretted string at 22nd on both sides, this sounded best to my ears. So it was a huge investment, around half of the value of my whole guitar, but It worth the money. Definitely recommended.

Great authentic vintage sound. Very versatile. The super high output humbucker does the job for the most part, but I can’t be too choosy. It is so cool I can use one guitar for the whole gig.

  8. Jeff Doyle

I was looking for something different to do with an HSS American Elite Strat. Lindy said that if I was looking for a legit humbucker bridge thing, that I should just do the standard HSS. I already have one of those so off we went with the 4 split blade idea. I wanted to install them myself but was thankful that Lindy put the bridge pair together…I used the Fralin pickguard and wired the set with push-push pots as the two tone controls. One push-push switch makes the bridge “single coil,” and the other wires the bridge to be on regardless of the switch, so you can use it with positions 4 and 5. I used 500k pots but found I preferred the bridge with 250k, so I lowered the value for that one and left the neck and middle to see 500k. I used a standard 5-way switch. I really like the separate height adjustments for the two halves of the “humbucker.” Most of my guitars have humbuckers in the bridge, so I’d guess it makes sense that I set the treble side of the humbucker fairly even, which makes the high strings thicker. However, after experimenting a little I found that I like the bass side offset a bit, which gives more clarity and punch to the wound strings. This guitar cuts through the mix WELL. The single coil sounds are pure Strat. Split blade Blues in the neck are one of my favorite strat sounds, and the inbetween “quack” at 2 and 4 are everything I’d expected. With the push/push switches I can also get a sort of Tele thing using bridge single and neck. In the end, I couldn’t be happier–it sounds GREAT and looks really cool too. Thanks to Lindy and Tyler at Fralin for all of your help!

    Fantastic purchase!
My whole purchase experience was excellent. Lindy Fralin took time to call me after my order was received to clarify my expectations and make a very helpful suggestion about an option that, with my pickup choices, wasn’t needed. He could have left that and just let me pay for it. That level of professionalism is rare. The tone of the pickups is everything I hoped for. The tone is subjective of course and adjectives can be difficult but I would describe them as full, round, nuanced and touch-sensitive. I have never heard positions 2 and 4 sound so great. I now play through a Kemper profiling amp and these pickups let all my favourite profiles bloom. I am completely sold on the blender pot option for neck and bridge. My Strat needed a bit of body modification to properly accommodate the prewired set up; not challenging. The fit and finish of the product is excellent. Thank you, Lindy Fralin, for expanding pickup technology and providing guitarists with a high-quality product.

For all you tone junkies! Like me, this custom pickguard has all the arrangements to achieve maximum stellar musical tones…no matter what your style calls for, you name it, it does it. For blues, the neck position kills any SRV Licks ? you choose. The Bridge Position with the Blender Pot gives you such an attack without the teeth. Throw it back to the Neck, roll-off on the second Blender, and you have chime you can’t distinguish between the real thing. The middle position for country fatness is to die for. The second and fourth parallel position for jamming makes you want to drive all day. All I can say whether your style calls for blues, Country, Jazz, Alternative, Metal, Funk… or whatever these blades will cut and never get dull.
