Frequently asked questions
Questions
Answers
- How do I tell which pickup is which? Top Λ
Each pickup has leads that are cut to length for each position. Bridge being the shortest and neck being the longest. Stickers will be provided in the near future.
- How do your pickups compare to your competitors? Top Λ
We can't give you a honest answer because we only listen to our product and older original manufacturers from the golden age of electric guitars.
- What value pot should I use with my pickups? Top Λ
In general Fender used 250K pots and Gibson 500K. We recommend these values unless you want a brighter or darker sound. Raising the value will brighten the sound while lowering it will darken it.
- How do I adjust my pickup heights? Top Λ
We suggest that you bar the strings at the highest fret on the guitar and adjust the pickups fairly close the strings. You will notice that a false harmonic or overtone will sound out particularly on the neck with the bass string. Adjust the pickup away until this overtone disappears. This is as close as you can get the neck pickup and will also be the loudest. From this point it is a matter of individual taste. The further away the pickup is the better it will sound but it will have less output.
- I added a bassplate and now I'm getting squealing/microphonics. What should I do? Top Λ
The bassplate was either knocked loose in installation or was installed without heating the wax or no wax at all. Please follow this link » Directions for Installing a Baseplate
- When will my order be shipped? Why does it take so long to get my order? Top Λ
Please be patient. Due to the time we spend with each pickup our leave time may vary. We ship all orders with Fed-Ex and they require a signature. Your order will be processed as soon as possible. Some rewinds may take longer due to the extended time needed to repair them correctly. Please send your packages with some type of delivery confirmation to save us both some time.
- I don't want to use Fed-Ex. Will you ship Priority Mail? Top Λ
We will ship with the U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail but you will have to assume ALL risk involved. Our packages are only insured with Fed-Ex. We will not insure with U.S. Mail.
- Do you accept credit cards? Top Λ
Sorry but we don't accept credit cards. If you would prefer to pay this way please see our Dealers.
- What does a blender pot do? Top Λ
A blender pot will fade in the neck pickup to the bridge position and bridge pickup to the neck position.
- What value capacitor should I use for tone? Top Λ
The tone cap used in the 50's was a .1mfd but in the 60's was a .05mfd. You can use a number of different values. We recommend that you experiment to see what suits your tastes. A Stronger cap (.1 mfd ) will do more and start rolling off highs at a lower frequency, a lower value cap (.001 mfd ) will do less and start rolling off highs at a higher frequency.
- How much money should I send with my rewinds? Top Λ
Rewinds can vary greatly in price because of labor, parts, or they may be easily fixed. If you aren't sure just send the pickups with a detailed letter and we will call you with the price. If your pickup is not listed on our rewind page this also applies. More info here »
- I bought my pickups used. How can I tell if I have Fralin pickups? Top Λ
Our pickups are not marked with our name. All of our dealer's are reputable and can be trusted. We will be glad to verify our product if you send it along with prepaid postage plus $5.00 OR $15.00 for Fed-Ex plus verification.
